To go along with our bug-themed bookshelf, I put together the simplest little bug sensory bin, and it ended up being one of those activities that held my toddler’s attention far longer than expected.
The setup was incredibly easy:
- Green crinkle paper for “grass”
- Plastic bug figurines
- A magnifying glass
Sometimes the simplest activities become the most engaging.
My toddler spent so much time digging through the “grass,” hiding bugs, searching for them with the magnifying glass, and talking about the different insects he found. It naturally encouraged imaginative play, fine motor skills, and observation without needing anything elaborate.
I love pairing sensory bins with our current book themes because it helps bring stories and learning to life in a hands-on way. After reading bug books together, he was especially excited to identify ants, spiders, and beetles inside the bin.
This activity was:
- Low prep
- Budget friendly
- Easy to store
- Great for independent play
- Perfect for themed learning at home
The older I get into motherhood, the more I realize toddlers truly don’t need complicated setups. A few simple materials and a little invitation to explore can create the sweetest learning moments.
